Five rules to getting through a tax enquiry
Always negotiate from a position of strength
Keep this is mind as more often than not you will be involved in some form of negotiation with HM Revenue & Customs.
Know your legal rights
There are numerous Laws written specifically to ‘protect the taxpayer’ – know them.
Don’t attend a meeting with the Revenue unless it’s in your interest
Attending meetings with the Revenue are nearly always voluntary although any information you provide can be used against you.
At the same time meetings play an important part in settling an enquiry – use them wisely.
Revenue Guidance is not Law
The Revenue will frequently refer to their internal Guidance to back up their assertions. Guidance is not Law so if you have any doubt whatsoever ask for a copy of the Law.
Keep calm
Although it’s only natural for you to be anxious and tense this will only make your enquiry more difficult and restrict clear thinking.
Be composed and move forward one step at a time.
